Our Birding List

This is a list of birds we have seen with notes as to where and when we saw them.  This list is a work in progess as we will add to it as we see new birds.

Northumberland County, VA, and the Virginia Northern Neck

We moved here in November 2007 and spent February - July 2008 building a new house; we moved into the house in July 2008.  Here's a list of birds we have seen here.

Bird Remarks
Eastern Bluebird All over the place here; year-round resident; local Audubon Society builds and sells bluebird houses, which are all over the place.  Common bird in open forests, edge of fields, around bluebird houses.
Tundra Swan Winter residents along with Mute Swan.  On 24 December 2008 observed a nice flock of Tundras -- 10-18 of them on the river in front of our house.  Here are photos.
Pileated Woodpecker Year-round resident.  Secretive.  Makes a lot of noise when pecking away at trees to get at insects and worms under the bark.  Observed one in the woods in Pine Crest Acres (Jan 2008), off Bogey Neck Rd, and one in woods on Newman Neck Rd between Fountain Gate Rd. and Potomac Dr. (Nov-Dec 2008)
Bald Eagle Eagles and osprey are residents here.  They nest in tall trees along the water; osprey nest on pilings, buoys, water tanks, and other tall structures.
Osprey

Ditto.

Black Vultures Common bird in this area.  See them roosting in trees, on communication towers, water towers, and the like.  Feed on road kill and other carrion.  Often see them early in the morning with their wings spread, warming in the sun.
Common Crow Common, year-round resident.
Northern Cardinal Common, year-round resident.
Northern Mockingbird Common, year-round resident.
