Jupiter
and
Three Moons
This photo was taken on 8 August 2007 using the Sony DSC-P93 camera and a 26mm eyepiece. Shot through an Orion XT-12 Dobsonian telescope, focal length 1500mm -- with the 26mm eyepiece, the magnification was 58X. I cropped the original photo and used Photoshop to enhance the contrast.
This is what you see in this photo:
- The brightest object is the planet Jupiter.
- To the left descending away from Jupiter is a string of three small objects -- these are three of Jupiter's four Galilean moons -- in this photo the three moons are Io (closest to Jupiter), Europa (in the center), and Callisto (farthest away from Jupiter). The fourth moon, Gannymede, was hidden behind Jupiter when this photo was taken.
- To the far left of the photo is a star that I cannot identify -- I think the star is in the constellation Scorpio.
