Our Garden
as of
Mid-May 2009
-- page 1 --
We intended to post photos of our garden every few days as it developed, but,
as with a lot of good intentions, it didn't work out that way.
The last photos of the garden that we posted were in early April and a lot
has happened since then.
- We built two more raised beds; purchased 7 tons each of topsoil
and compost; used the wheelbarrow to fill the two new beds half-and-half
with topsoil and compost; tilled the soil in the new beds.
- Kept the tomato and herb seeds growing.
- Purchased some plants.
- As the weather warmed, planted seed and plants.
- Spread straw mulch over all the beds.
Here are photos of our garden as of 16 May 2009.

Here's a photo of the entire garden. The octagonal bed in the
foreground is the herb garden. The large green plants in the center are
salad greens -- lettuce, spinach, and a mesculum mix. Rosemary is in the
two green pots (one in the foreground, another on the other side of the bed).
Other herbs are: cilantro; basil; parsley; chives; oregano; thyme; and
sage. The hose feeds a sprinkler that is staked down in the center of the
herb bed so we can water the herbs.

Next in line is this bed -- from right to left: broccoli (2 rows);
Brussels sprouts (1 row); onions (four rows; two varieties); peppers (3 rows --
jalapeno, hot banana, sweet banana, green bell peppers). The black thing
winding through the bed is a soak hose that is staked down. We attach a
hose to this soak hose to water this bed.

The next bed is the tomato bed. Right to left: one row of okra
(planted a week earlier, just beginning to sprout); five rows of tomatoes:
Big Boy (hybrid); and, the following heirloom tomatoes: Dona; Martino's
Roma; Radiator Charlie's Mortgage Lifter; Green Zebra; Brandywine Red;
Beefsteak; Rutgers; Rutgers Improved; Believe It or Not; and, Aunt Gertie's
Gold.
