Our Garden
and
Landscaping
2009

This section of our website will describe our gardening and landscaping at our new home beginning Spring 2009.

We both love to garden -- vegetables, flowers, and landscaping -- so -- when we built our new house we planned to put in a lot of gardens.  We planned the gardens during the winter of 2008-2009 and now that Spring 2009 is almost here, we started our gardening and landscaping.

When to plant

We live in Northumberland County, Virginia.  A major consideration for gardening -- especially for vegetable gardens -- is the date of the last frost in the spring and the date of the first frost in the fall.  You need to know these dates because some plants cannot be set out until after all frost danger is passed, and, if you are planting late in the summer, you want your plants to be established before the first frost can kill or damage them.

Our last frost date is 10 April and first frost date is 10 November.

What to plant

We planned to plant:

  • Vegetable garden: tomatoes; beans; corn; peppers; broccoli; Brussels sprouts; okra; and asparagus

  • Trees:  Flowering trees -- dogwood, redbud, Japanese cherry, Japanese plum; Fruit trees -- apple, fig, peach.

  • Flowers:  Perennials; roses; iris; daylilies; annuals

  • Herbs:  We plan to plant a separate herb garden with 10-15 types of common culinary herbs.

How to plant

We plan to plant our herbs and vegetables in raised beds except for corn and beans which will be in rows tilled in the lawn.

Trees will be planted into the lawn.

Flowers will be planted in beds separated by type, color, and need for sun or shade.

Pictures and details of our gardens

These links will take you to pages with details of our garden.  As the gardens develop we will change the articles -- please come back and visit often to see how our gardening is progressing (or not).
