Time for a change.

Adolph (Adolf) Schlatter

Possibly Adolph R. Schlatter; 1930 Census records him as Adolph R.  He used the spelling “Adolph;” his name appears in some places as “Adolf.”  Engraving on his headstone identifies him as “Joseph A. Schlatter.”  We also have a letter from his brother in which he is identified as “John” and “Adolf.”

Born 11 October 1863.  Town of birth is listed on his citizenship application as Ganterswil, Switzerland.  Check of maps on Internet finds Ganterswil as small town in St. Gallen Canton, Switzerland.

Died, Shaw, Mississippi, 26 November 1930.  He suffered a stroke in ???? and was an invalid until his death.  Buried in city cemetery, Shaw, MS.

Travels between Switzerland and US; marriages

First entry into US; 16 August 1890

  • On his citizenship application he states he first entered US on 24 August 1890.  Ellis Island records do not go back that far.
  • In our family records we have the original of what appears to be his steamship ticket showing he departed Havre, France, for New York on 16 August 1890.

Second entry into US; 30 June 1897

  • Adolph Schlatter entered the US a second time on 30 June 1897; his name was incorrectly entered on ship’s manifest as Adolph Schetter
  • On 5 December I searched the Ellis Island records using a partial name search capability.  I searched for “Ado Sch” who entered the US between 1890 and 1900.  I found the following entry:

Adolph Schetter:  Entered the US 30 June 1897 from Antwerp, vessel Westernland; last place of residence Zurich.

  • Adolph Schetter was 34 years old in 1897, which yields date of birth = 1863.  He is a baker and his destination in the US is Riverhead, Long Island, where he has a brother.  Notation on the ship manifest says “has 1st paper.”  Manifest also shows him as married; to whom was he married in 1897 (see discussion of marriage to Louise Kleiner(t), below).
  • We know that Adolph Schlatter first entered the US in 1890.  When he entered in 1897 he may have had with him his 1890 entry papers which would explain the notation “has 1st paper.”
  • We know from letters written by his brother Fred and by Fred’s friend that Adolph’s brother Fred lived in Patchogue, Long Island at time of his death in October – November 1905.  If his brother Fred was on Long Island in 1897, Adolph could have gone there to live with his brother.
  • Thus – appears that Adolph Schlatter entered the US on 30 June 1897, bound for Riverhead, LI.

First marriage:  Adolph Schlatter and Louise Kliener(t)

  • According to notes in Adolph’s memorandum book, Adolph and Louise Kleiner Schlatter were in Memphis in November 1903.   They were in Memphis and Senatobia, Mississippi, from November 1903 until August or September 1908.
  • 1930 Federal Census for Shaw, Mississippi, shows Adolph living with his wife, Emma, and sons John, Joe, and Freddie, and Emma’s brother, Louis Waldner.
  • The 1930 Census also shows Adolph’s age at first marriage to be 40.  He was born in 1863, thus, it appears he was first married in 1903, probably to Louise Kleiner(t).
  • Have not been able to locate Adolph or Louise in 1900 census records for Mississippi, New York, or Tennessee.

Adolph Schlatter, Louise, and “Baby Louise” in Switzerland, 1908-1910

  • Notes in the memo book have Adolph and Louise and “Baby Louise” in Switzerland September 1908 through July 1910.

Adolph and Emma Waldner Schlatter

  • Adolf and Emma Schlatter entered the US at Ellis Island on 31 October 1910.
  • Adolph and Emma are not in the 1910 federal census because they entered the US after the census was taken.
  • Federal census record for 1920 shows Schlatter, Adolph; Emma; John A., Joseph living in Shaw, Mississippi;  Adolph is a baker.  (Note:  I found these records on the Ancestry.com website where the name is misspelled as “Schlutter.”)
  • Federal census record for 1930 shows Schlatter, Adolph R.; Emma; John; Josie; Freddie; and Waldner, Louis.  Louis Waldner is Emma’s brother; he came to Shaw to work in bakery shop after Adolph suffered a stroke.  (Note:  Ancestry.com website has first names misspelled as Ralph (Adolph) and Suddie (Freddie).)
