An Iris
from the garden of
Annie Lee Richardson Schlatter
Joe's mother died of pancreatic cancer on 18 March 2007 at age 82, Knoxville,
TN. We cleaned, repaired, painted, and sold her house in May 2007.
Before the house was sold, we removed some of her favorite flowers as keepsakes:
- Ajuga: A green groundcover with blue flowers.
She saved this ajuga from her grandmother's garden. The ajuga is now
planted at our son's home near Fredericksburg, VA, where it is now in the
garden of the fifth generation of our family
- Iris: We retrieved several rhizomes of one iris.
- Day Lilies: We retrieved two day lily plants.
- Roses: We removed two Our Lady of Guadalupe
rose plants that are now planted at our son's home near Fredericksburg, VA.
Shortly after removing the plants we planted the ajuga and roses at our son's
home. We put the iris and daylilies in big clay pots and hauled them
around with us -- first to our apartment in Knoxville, TN, from May to
November 2007; then to a rental house in Wicomico Church, VA, from
November 2007 to July 2008; then to our new home where we took the iris
and day lilies out of the pots and planted them in March 2009.
The first to bloom was this iris. It's now blooming in our yard as it
did for years in Joe's mother's lawn.
